Easy Ways You Can Make Your Grocery Trip A Little More Healthy

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be difficult. I know better than anyone that wanting to eat healthier can immediately seem overwhelming. If you are someone who struggles with overbuying or purchasing unhealthy items at the grocery store, here are some ways to you can make your grocery trip a little more healthy.

Don’t go to the store hungry

It really is amazing how different my grocery cart looks when I’m going to the store hungry compared to when I’m not. When I’m hungry and I go to the grocery store, anything that looks good ends up in my grocery cart. And most of the time, the food sits in my fridge or pantry completely untouched for a few weeks/or even months. Going to the store on a full stomach is a great way to avoid buying junk and can also save you a good chunk of money.

Be prepared

Along with going to the store hungry, going to the store unprepared is also a huge no-no. Having a list and being prepared will help you plan on purchasing healthy foods like fruits and vegetables vs. processed. Sitting down and making a list of healthy meals and planning the list appropriately is another great way to make your grocery trip healthier.

Spend time buying products on the perimeter of the store

If you want to make your grocery trip healthier, try to plan your list and shopping trip by shopping on the outside of the store. The perimeter of the store is filled with fruits, vegetables, dairy, and protein that are key to a healthy diet. This doesn’t mean you can’t buy canned goods or condiments in the middle of the store. But try to spend the majority of your shopping time on the perimeter where the ‘healthier’ food options are available.

It’s Okay To Not Buy Organic

Just because you aren’t buying organic food, doesn’t mean your grocery trip is unhealthy. If you are shopping mostly around the perimeter of the store, preparing ahead of time, and purchasing ‘healthier’ foods than you previously were, organic food isn’t necessary. I strongly believe organic food is not a necessity to be healthy.

Store Hop for cheaper prices

With inflation right now, groceries are more expensive than ever. I know not everyone has the ability to spend over $100 on groceries for the week, but lucky for you there are some alternative options. One of my favorite grocery stores to go to if I’m trying to save some money is Aldi. They have FANTASTIC prices when it comes to produce, dairy, proteins and canned goods. Trust me, shop at Aldi one time, and you will be hooked. Of course, Aldi doesn’t carry all the name brand items that you may be searching for, so saving a few items for your typical Kroger or Publix may still be what you need to do. But you may want to try purchasing most of your items from alternative locations.
