The Fitness Routine I Trust for Achieving my Goals

I have been open to sharing about my fitness highs and lows in some of my past blog posts. Healthy Habits and Routines , Fitness resolution mistakes , & How to jump back into a fitness routine. I have had my fair share of successes and failures when it comes to my fitness and consistency. Here is the fitness routine I trust for achieving my goals.

Using Supplements:

Supplements can’t take the place of a healthy diet, but they are good to have on hand if you find yourself having some gaps in your nutrition.

I am someone who truly does not get enough macro/micronutrients in their diet. Having protein powders and greens on hand are super beneficial to me in order to help fill the gaps in my nutrition.

I really enjoy taking supplements and trying out new ones. I am all about trying new flavors of protein, greens, energy drinks and BCAA’s. Having a variety of different supplements in my pantry that I enjoy does really help my motivation for working out and focusing on my fitness.

Because everyone is different, it is important to talk with your doctor if you are interested in adding new supplements into your routine.

At-home Workout Space

Being able to have access to a gym just by going down a few flights of steps is has been very beneficial for my consistency. I have preached for years that working out at home has always been more successful for me than going to a gym.

When I started with Beachbody workouts, I saw amazing progress. Being able to work on my fitness from the comfort of my own home was something I loved. I still utilize Beachbody workouts weekly, (especially since I can follow them while still being at home). But being able to have a small ‘gym’ with a good selection of equipment in my home is such a big help when it comes to reaching and staying on track with my fitness goals.

My consistency with fitness started almost 5 years ago. I purchased 2 sets of dumbbells (5# and 8#) and slowly progressed to more equipment. We have been able to compile so much more equipment over the last few years. Don’t go broke trying to own every piece of equipment you think you need to be successful. I promise, you don’t need more than a few pairs of dumbbells to get started. Add to your collection slowly.

Scheduling & Flexibility

As I mentioned here, scheduling and having a plan for my workouts has been very helpful when it comes to staying on track with my fitness goals. But it’s also important to note that allowing myself to be flexible has also been a huge help. Life gets crazy, and even though I try to plan to workout 5 days a week, I know that my schedule is flexible and that it’s OKAY to miss a workout because my body isn’t feeling it. I would rather skip a workout that I wasn’t in the mood for and try again on my scheduled rest day in order to be able to put more effort into that workout.

Motivation vs. Intimidation

Within the last year I have unfollowed so many fitness accounts on social media. It took me a long time to realize that the people I was idolizing didn’t have similar lifestyles as me. They didn’t have children, they were single, or they made a lot more money. A lot of them also posted about giving 2 hours of time to their workouts. We should all know by now that what works for one person doesn’t mean it’s going to work for everyone.

Choosing to unfollow people who gave me a false sense of hope on social media was super helpful. The live that people would portray online was a huge trigger for me. I wanted my life to be exactly like theirs. I found other accounts online that had similar goals and situations as me. The best part was that they weren’t promising exact results. There was no unqualified advice. Just simply sharing what works for them and giving themselves motivation to stay on track with their goals.

It is so important to follow and look up to people who will actually motivate you and not intimidate you.

Having Proper Equipment That Works For Me

I’m not someone who enjoyed going to the gym because it was very overwhelming. You don’t need a bunch of fancy gym equipment to see results. I found a routine that worked for me from the comfort of my own home, and with my own equipment. Here are some of my favorites:

My Gym Recommendations

Adjustable Dumbbells

These adjustable dumbbells were a late addition to our ‘home gym’. My husband eventually wanted heavier weights and decided to splurge on these adjustable Bowflex Dumbbells. They are an investment but are very nice to have in a home gym if you don’t want to have a ton of dumbbells lying around.

Dumbbells

If you’re just starting off, I recommend purchasing just a few sets of weights. I started off with 5# and 8# weights for a few months before adding to my collection. You can gradually continue to add more weights as you see fit. Amazon, and Target have a great selection of lower weights, and if you are looking to save even more money, play it again sports has certain dumbbells for cheap!

Weight Bench

I purchased this weight bench for my husband when we were living in Tennessee. It is affordable and basic. It definitely does the job without you having to spend a ton of money!

Ankle Weights

Ankle weights are also a great piece of basic workout equipment. You can add them to your daily walks and burn a few extra calories without too much extra effort.

Bala Bangles Ankle Weights

If you are looking for a more stylish pair of ankle weights, I first saw this brand on Shark Tank. They are super cute and a little prettier to look at than the standard ankle weights listed above. They come in a ton of colors and are perfect for the ‘girly’ girl.

Glute Bands

Glute bands are a great way to rapidly activate your glutes and engage your hips. They can come in a variety of different resistance and a bunch of colors and patterns based on what you are looking for.

Long Resistance Bands

Long resistance bands are also a great basic addition to your home workout space. These can be a great option if you have limited resources or can’t get the variety of dumbbells you are looking for. There are endless exercises you can do with long resistance bands. They come in various patterns, colors and you can choose what resistance works for you. They are also very affordable so you can have a variety of options at your disposal.

Fitness Floor Mat

Floor mats are also a great thing to have if you are working out at home. They provide comfortable support for you feet, back or any exercise you may do sitting down.

*Remember, these do not all need to be purchased at once. We started with 2 sets of dumbbells that I purchased at Target. I utilized them for a few months before purchasing another set of dumbbells that were 10#. Then added 12#’s. After about a year we invested in adjustable weights and a workout bench. Now we have a NordicTrack treadmill and a power rack*
