How To Prepare For Your First Therapy Session

Going to your first therapy appointment can be very overwhelming. Looking back on the the day leading up to my first appointment. I can’t even begin to explain the anxiety and fear that I was experiencing. What should I expect? Was this the right step for me? I went in with an open mind and told myself that this didn’t have to be a “forever” thing. If I didn’t like it, I could try another therapist or try again another time.

Here are 4 tips on how to prepare for your first therapy session.

Location

If you are doing a telehealth or virtual session, find a quiet and private space. The last thing you need to worry about is having interruptions. If you are able to be alone at home for your session that will make a huge difference.

Clothing

Whether you are in-person or doing a virtual session, wear comfortable clothing! It’s easier to open up and be comfortable talking about your problems when you are comfortable in your skin. Majority of the time I wear a baggy t-shirt and sweatpants with no makeup. I want to make sure that I am my most vulnerable self in order to get the best results. Try to wear comfortable clothing and find a comfortable spot in your home.

Things You May Need

Stay hydrated and keep tissues nearby. You may be surprised the type of emotions that will come out of you during your session. If you don’t have tissues nearby, you may find yourself holding back your true feelings. You may feel scared to let your emotions out. If you are doing an in-person session, your therapist will probably have some readily available. Don’t be afraid to use them.

Encourage Yourself

Tell yourself that therapy is a form of self-care. This could be one of the best decisions you will ever make for yourself. Sometimes you may doubt yourself and your decision to seek help. But keep telling yourself that this is the self-care you may need to help become the best version of yourself.

I have so many other tips I could share with someone who wants advice on how to prepare for their first therapy session. But I feel as though these are the most important.
