How Therapy Helped Me Become the Best Version of ME

This is How going to therapy helped me become the best version of ME.

REASSURANCE

I am always validated and listened to without feeling judged. I’ve mentioned it before, and I will mention it again. I know everything happens for a reason. The therapist I have is the one that was made for me. I can’t begin to explain the calmness and relief I feel during and after my sessions. It’s always been hard for me to express my emotions. The second I am feeling in-validated, I will shut down. My therapist makes me feel completely heard and never judged. When I feel heard and reassured, I become a happier version of me. I appreciate knowing that I am not being judged.

COPING SKILLS

I have learned so many tools that help me cope with the hard times while also appreciating the good. My therapist focuses on using a “strength based approach” (as he describes on his website). He is able to use my strengths to help me find my inner resources. These resources then help me respond more effectively to problem solving. He has always held me accountable and isn’t afraid to speak the truth – while never letting me feel unheard. I have learned so many coping skills throughout the last year. I’ve learned to schedule time to worry and enjoy the small beautiful moments. I’ve learned to be proud of myself, and to focus on ME. It’s still something I still struggle with sometimes, but it is absolutely getting better every day.

CONTINUOUS MENTAL HEALTH MAINTENANCE

Even after a year of going to therapy 1-2x a month, I continue to keep up with my bi-weekly sessions. It gives me a judgment free zone where I can be open and honest with everything in my life. I always leave feeling like I can take on the world. I have someone in my corner that talks to me as an adult. He treats me as a human being who makes mistakes and he gives the best advice I could receive. There is never any pressure to be perfect. Having that understanding and belief that it is okay to make mistakes, really does help my mental health.

It offers me support and relief

My therapist will always offer a quick chat to help me determine what is happening in my head. My therapist wants to make sure I am being safe and smart. He will provide the necessary support I need to get through that moment. Sometimes it’s just a 15 minute phone cal. But the support I can get when I need it the most is very helpful.

Discovering things I never knew about myself.

What I enjoy about my therapist is that he uses the strength based approach. I thought I could determine all of my strengths independently, but I was wrong. It has been beneficial to have an outsider to help me. He can help me look back and assess my past, while helping me identify new strengths that I never realized before. Therapists can help you find out things about yourself that you may have never realized on your own.
