In A Workout Slump? Here’s What To Do

I hit this block a few times a year. When I find myself super unmotivated to workout and feel myself losing interest in any sort of fitness activity. With summer coming to an end, I’m already dreading the winter blues that are coming within the next few months. The past few weeks I’ve found myself super unmotivated and uninterested in working out. I’ve found myself here before, so I’ve been able to identify ways to help. Are you in a workout slump? Here’s What To Do.

Feeling unmotivated in the gym or with your fitness in general can be super frustrating. Especially if you are finding yourself at a standstill with your body image or fitness goals. If you are in a workout slump, here’s what to do.

Set New Goals

Maybe you’re tired of the goals you set a few months back. They might not be realistic anymore or your goals may have changed. Try to identify 2-3 new goals when it comes to what you want in your fitness journey. Maybe your goals were previously about losing a few pounds. So this time, maybe setting new goals about workout consistency will be helpful to jump back into the routine.

Listen To Your Body

It’s easy to be hard on yourself when you find yourself not doing what you’re supposed to be doing. But sometimes your body just needs a break. When you are feeling unmotivated, try to figure out the root cause. Is your body sore? Or are you just being lazy? If your not feeling sore and your body is feeling good, your lack of motivation may just be from pure laziness. And that’s okay too. However being lazy every day isn’t going to help get you out of your workout slump.

Just Move Your Body

You don’t have to jump back into your fitness classes or get back to your daily hour long workouts. Sometimes in order to get back into a routine, you just have to move your body. Start out by talking short walks outside (get that vitamin D to help boost your mood). And slowly start integrating lifting weights. Even if it’s only for 5 minutes. Just starting to move your body again will help you slowly get back into your routine.

Refresh your wardrobe

Nothing feels better to me when I’m in a workout slump than to buy a new workout outfit. When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you are probably more motivated to start working out again. It can be a cute workout top, a new pair of leggings or new running shoes. Do a little refresh with your workout clothing and see if that helps you get back into it again.

Start small

Just like I mentioned about moving your body, it’s important to start small with every aspect. Maybe your nutrition hasn’t been what it’s needed to be. Start easing back on eating out and trying to integrate more fruits and vegetables in your diet. When you start eating better, you will have more energy. And when you find yourself having more energy, you’re probably going to be motivated to get back into your workout routine.

Do what you enjoy

Don’t force yourself to get into a workout you don’t like. Forcing yourself to do a workout you don’t like is a good way to keep you in that workout slump. If you find the most enjoyment in Pilates or cycling, go sign up for a class. If you know you enjoy lifting weights, let that be your first workout back. You know what your body likes and how you’ve made progress in the past. If you are doing something you enjoy you are more than likely going to be able to stick to a routine.

Finding yourself in a workout slump can be frustrating. No matter how motivated you want to be, sometimes that just isn’t the case. If you find yourself in a workout slump, these are some tips you should try.
